Join us!
✅ STEP 1: Smell-test: matching is all you need
Interested in joining our lab? Thank you very much for your interest!
Since you are going to spend a long time with us, it is very important for you to make sure if you are comfortable working in our lab. Here, the criteria of comfortableness varies: your research interest, lab environment, your expectation, working style, etc. So I (very, very) strongly recommend you to make the best effort to probe our lab using the five senses (otherwise, we both will be unhappy)!
I offer several hints for this:
- Go through every pages of our website. Who is working, how many students do they have? How often do they publish papers, which area, which conference? What expertise do they have? Are they rich (research fundings)? Do they enjoy the research? What do they do daily? You can learn lots of things through these web pages.
- Read the lab intro webpage at JAIST (日本語版はこちら), where I describe basic skills I expect from you and general direction for supervision, let alone research direction.
✅ STEP 2: Find out how to join us
For JAIST students
WARNING: We only accept students who have contacted Prof. Inoue before enrolling at JAIST. This policy ensures that (a) there is a good match between students and the lab and that (b) Prof. Inoue can dedicate sufficient time to supervising each student.
For non-JAIST students
Our lab belongs to JAIST, a postgraduate university in Ishikawa, Japan. JAIST has both master’s program and doctoral program, and welcomes undergrad/grad students worldwide in Ishikawa campus and 社会人学生 in Tokyo satellite campus.
- NOTE: Ishikawa students accepted by regular examinations are not 100% guaranteed to be able to work with us (as mentioned above). However, you can avoid this by using the following university schemes
- Informal pre-approval system (配属研究室入学前内定制度)
- For international students only: Examination for Admission on Recommendation for Overseas Residents (Master’s or Doctoral)
Anyway, please carefully read these documents (日本語版はこちら) for more details about the admissions and find out a suitable scheme for you.
Here is a useful guide for scholarship available in JAIST.
✅ STEP 3: Talk to Prof. Inoue
Please schedule a (possibly virtual) lab tour. By default, the meeting agenda is as follows:
- Overview talk of our lab: our research projects and lab activity (10 min.)
- Free discussion: why you are interested in our lab, your background, your research plan, anything else you want to ask, etc. (20 min.)
IMPORTANT: Before the meeting, please collect your thoughts about your research plan and what you want to ask about our lab. Through the conversation, we would like you to probe our lab to see if our lab is a good fit for you.
How to make an appointment?
- Find our available time from the calendar below
- Please contact Prof. Inoue via email (日本語可), indicating:
- You want to schedule a lab tour
- How you want to join us (see STEP 2)
- Your date/time preference for the tour (30 min. window).
We look forward to speaking with you!
